Last updated: July 26, 2016 After living in the Flower Mound area for about a decade, I’ve been able to personally witness the DFW-area restaurant scene boom from being above-average, to completely awesome throughout this relatively short period of time. There are still lots of sub-par restaurants around here, don’t get me wrong – just as you’d find in almost any other American city. But, in-between the boring Rosa’s Cafe’s and Fuzzy’s Taco Shops that you’ll notice on practically every street corner throughout DFW, you’ll also find some real hidden gems around here if you just search hard enough. This is why I’ve created this review guide – to list the top 5 best restaurants in Flower Mound for your reading (eating) pleasure.
So, this is ultimately going to be a quick, short and dirty write-up of the top 5 best restaurants in Flower Mound that I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. This restaurant review guide will probably save you lots of time and hard-earned money, as I’ve pretty much already gone through the “restaurant research” process for you. I’ve been eating out 2-3 times per week in the Flower Mound area during most weeks for the past 10 years! From hole-in-the-wall restaurants to high-end venues, I don’t discriminate when it comes to a restaurant’s looks.
99% of the time, I decide on where to eat based on the quality of food and service that I receive in exchange for the price I pay. This can of course differ if I’m going out on a date, or looking for a venue with a little bit of a higher-energy or more bustling social scene.
I’m about to hit you with The Top 5 Best Restaurants in Flower Mound so that you can cut through the nonsense, and go straight to where the best food and atmosphere is cookin’ in or around Flower Mound, Texas. Alright, let’s do this!
Best Restaurants In Flower Mound #1. The Empress of China
My favorite go-to Chinese restaurant is located right here in Flower Mound. The Empress of China offers high-end American-Chinese food at value prices. I absolutely love it. You get piles of high-quality food here for the price you pay, and you get to eat in a super nice atmosphere as well.
It can be a little quiet here at times, as it’s really not that busy on most nights. It’s also situated in kind of a hidden location near a Chick-Fil-A restaurant – so it’s definitely a place that’s overshadowed by more popular venues.
Average plates cost around $14 at dinner time, but you’ll more than likely be taking half of your food to-go. I like that Empress of China provides both quality AND quantity. Who says you can’t have it all? Get the hot and sour soup as an appetizer to start with, then move on to the Mongolian stir-fry for an amazing main course.
Best Restaurants In Flower Mound #2. BJ’s Brewhouse (Technically Lewisville, TX)
I know exactly what you’re thinking. “How can a chain restaurant be one of the best restaurants on your guide? You’re a hack!” Well, the truth is that I don’t usually look too highly upon big-name chain restaurants either. But, BJ’s Brewhouse in Lewisville seems to offer a super upbeat and positive atmosphere along with great American food on an ultra-consistent basis.
If a chain restaurant offers better food and service than most other local restaurants in the area, then I’m still going to recommend it! I keep coming back to BJ’s in Lewisville, so I’ve got to recommend it to you all!
This particular BJ’s restaurant in Lewisville is actually the busiest location of the Franchise throughout all of Texas. Located right off of highway I-35, there’s *heavy traffic* at this location from 11AM all the way through close (around midnight on most nights). If you like great food, an energetic vibe and really good drinks, I don’t think that you can go wrong here.
Best Restaurants In Flower Mound #3. Burritos Locos Taqueria (Technically Grapevine, TX)
This place is another hidden gem that most people will never hear about. Burritos Locos Taqueria will be the best hole-in-the-wall dining experience you’ll ever have. The building is a former Chicken Express restaurant – now spiced up and turned into Burritos Locos Taqueria! You’re going to get such an authentic Mexican dining experience here that your waitresses probably won’t speak much English (I’m being serious). But you trust that this is a good problem to have. This means that you’ll be receiving REAL Mexican food here (no Tex-Mex) at dirt-cheap prices.
Order off the a-la-carte menu to get a full meal for about $6. Three steak or chicken tacos should take care of your hunger pains pretty quickly. Burritos Locos Taqueria is open both early and late – so you can snag some great breakfast tacos to-go while on your commute to work, or come by around midnight after some late-night partying.
Oh, and one last thing that’s important to mention…Burritos Locos Taqueria doesn’t have a liquor license – so they offer FREE MARGARITAS on Saturday’s. Crazy, right? Cheap and good food plus free lime or strawberry margaritas. This place is the absolute bomb.
Best Restaurants In Flower Mound #4. Main Street Bistro and Bakery (Technically Grapevine, TX)
This bistro is one of the most epic secrets of North Dallas. As a boulangerie/bakery, this is much more of a place for grabbing a quick desert and coffee rather than a full-service meal. But, the quality of desert that you can find here is god-like. These are the kinds of deserts I’d imagine God is munching on while hanging out near the gates of heaven. The pastries at Main Street Bistro and Bakery put La Madeleine’s entire existence to shame. This place is a must-visit.
The Croi-Dough-Nuts Brulee from Main Street Bistro and Bakery is literally the best-tasting doughnut I’ve ever had in my life. They can be extremely elusive to find as well, since everyone and their mother attempts order the entire stock of Croi-Dough-Nuts before most people can get a chance to taste one.
So go in here early (like 8 a.m. early), order a Croi-Dough-Nut Brulee and a fresh Segafredo coffee with cream, sit down, and enjoy one of the most indulgent mornings of your life as you people-watch in old town Grapevine. Read the Zomato reviews for more details.
Best Restaurants In Flower Mound #5. Zeppole Coastal Italian (Technically Grapevine, TX)
Zeppole easily wins my list of the best restaurants located in North Dallas for the combination of food, service, price, location and nearby entertainment options. Located inside of the Gaylord Texan Resort, you’re literally going to be dining inside of a half-a-billion-dollar property when you visit Zeppole. This alone should be enough of an incentive for you to justify paying the slightly overpriced “hotel cost” of the food you’ll find there.
Walking into the Gaylord Texan Resort feels like you’ve left the entire state of Texas behind and entered another mini-universe. It’s a four-star property for a reason. And the Zeppole restaurant (which is the real focus here) is a four-diamond restaurant that provides an amazing experience overall. It’s like you’re dining inside of a Catalina Wine Mixer or even an Italian wedding party.
The combination of eating great food at a restaurant that’s technically indoors but still *feels* like you’re attending an outdoor event is really something special. The coastal Italian food is great, the drinks are good, and eating at Zeppole is practically like attending a classy outdoor party. When you’re done with your meal at Zeppole, you can walk around the entire Gaylord Resort if you’d like. Walking around that place is sort of like sightseeing. You can walk through the massive indoor garden, head to another bar, and even take a shuttle bus to the Glass Cactus nightclub located on the Gaylord Texan property (it’s one of the highest-rated nightclubs in the U.S.).
After all of this is over with, you can even book a room at the Gaylord hotel to save an Uber trip home. The rates are reasonable for the quality/service you receive. I hope that this list of restaurants has provided you with lots of value. I tried my best to give my top recommendations of restaurants in DFW in this list.
